While we’re just breaking the 1GHz barrier on current Smartphones and to-be announced tablets we’re given a peak into the future of one particular ARM branch. GlobalFoundries, with AMD’s help, has busted out a 28nm Cortex-A9 processor with performance clocking in from 2GHz and reaching speedy heights of 2.5GHz and maybe even 2.8GHz with a “voltage overdrive”.

There’s word on production in Q4 this year but no word on when we’ll actually see these chips being used. Beyond that, GlobalFoundries detailed their roadmap for future processors with 20nm technology on the horizon and will be available to customers in 2013.
